Emulsion and Process Industry: Mixing Problems and Solutions
Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 9:30am to 10:10am
Mixing systems in the petrochemical industry involve a wide range of fluids from low viscosity single phase liquids to multi-phases including complex liquids. Development of effective mixing systems requires difficult experimentation using hydrocarbons often at high temperatures and pressures. Ideal methodology for scale-up using two or more sizes of pilot plants is frequently impractical due to limitations of budgets and schedules. When reactions are not involved, these difficulties may be reduced by using mockup fluids and ambient conditions. In some situations researchers are limited to mathematical and CFD modeling.
This presentation describes challenges in addressing a variety of mixing issues for understanding of controlling mechanisms and determining optimal designs of mixing equipment. Discussions will include a few examples of process applications with emphasis on R&D approach and commercial designs. These applications are chosen to focus on unique difficulties and cover batch & continuous operations, single phase hydrocarbons with very fast reactions, floating solids mixing, emulsifications w & w/o separation needs etc
