Colloidal membranes with high proton conductivity have been prepared by self-assembly of surface-sulfonated silica spheres. The structure, proton conductivity mechanism and factors affecting the conductivity of these novel nanoporous membranes will be discussed, as well as the preparation and propertied of hybrid polymer-modified proton-conducting opal membranes.
