The separate reactions of the homologous series of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol and 2-methyl-2-propanol) over H+/ZSM-5 were completed in an, isothermal, constant-volume, batch reactor. The effects of various process parameters such as pressure, temperature, reaction time, etc on the methanol to gasoline reaction were examined first. Subsequently, the other alcohols were studied for the changes in their product distribution when operating under similar conditions and compared to the results for reacting methanol.
The yields obtained from the different alcohol substrates will be discussed in the context of acid catalysis and related to the prior literature. The significance of the yield structures for changes in the substrates will be discussed in the context of processing synthesis gas to make transportation fuels and commodity chemicals over a proprietary, new multifunctional catalyst.
