Different processes have been proposed for the iodine section of the S_I cycle, essentially the reactive distillation of iodine and extractive distillation using phosphoric acid. The extractive distillation is currently used in the I-Neri demonstration loop (ILS). If the feasibility of the process has been demonstrated by General Atomics in the late 70's, many questions remain on the thermodynamic of the process, mainly related to the effective efficiency of this process, the purity of hydrogen and iodine products, and the recirculation rate of the expensive phosphoric acid. We try in this article to review all relevant available thermodynamical data in the literature and determine how they impact the evaluation of the different steps of this process.
