Membrane filtration under constant pressure is a well studied unit operation. For non plugging streams, permeability of the membrane is the key characteristics that can be defined at small scale. Standard pore blockage model is typically utilized to describe the plugging behavior. Recently more advanced plugging models have been presented that take into account various plugging mechanisms simultaneously.
To scale up these processes, device and system considerations need to be taken into account that will impact the filtration rate during the course of the process.
This presentation will focus on a case study on how to include system considerations at scale for nonplugging and a plugging streams.
