A new modeling approach for the Karr reciprocating plate extractor is being evaluated which applies fundamental static models with an added correction factor to account for the mechanical energy input. Correction factors for drop diameter, slip velocity, film mass transfer coefficient and axial mixing are used to determine the flooding velocity and apparent mass transfer efficiency. The initial results appear very promising based on data obtained using the toluene/acetone/water system (a high interfacial tension system). Future work is planned to check the proposed modeling approach with the butanol/succinic acid/water system (a low interfacial tension system).
