Attention is called to the need to be more transformative (risky and exploratory) in our research projections when exploring pneumatic conveying. The term transformative research is the strategy which has been adopted by many of the funding agencies in the world. Significant resources have been spent to provide new information but most of the time the research results in an incremental improvements or advances rather than making large gains in our knowledge. This paper reviews what may be considered as transformative advances in the field of pneumatic conveying over the past sixty + years. Where we do from here is addressed.
