2008 Annual Meeting
AIChE Centennial: Chemical Engineering Education: Past and Future
The Biological Sciences in Chemical Engineering
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 1:30pm to 2:00pm
The session will focus on how to prepare graduating engineers for the increasing role that biology plays in industry; including but not limited to the biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Regulatory and environmental constraints may require not only chemical engineers to have some knowledge of biology. Consequently, many engineering colleges are currently grappling with the questions like: do some or all engineers need some college-level biology training and which if any engineering departments should require this? Has the changing of engineering department names to include for example "biomolecular" been indicative of a shift towards more required or elective biology courses for engineering students, or in general more/better training in biology? The necessity of specific biology courses and topics in preparing engineering students for the industry of today and tomorrow will be discussed.
