Metabolic Engineering for Tissues and Organs

Chair(s)

Berthiaume, F., Física Aplicada III, Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenieros, Universidad de Sevilla, Spain

Co-chair(s)

Chan, C., Michigan State Uiversity

This session focuses on the development and application of metabolic engineering techniques and principles to mammalian systems, in the context of physiology and disease pathophysiology. Relevant topics include: (1) the characterization of pathway flux distributions in metabolic derangements of disease, such as diabetes, cancer, and hypercatabolic syndromes, etc.; (2) the development of nutritional, pharmacological, and other interventions to ameliorate these conditions; (3) the development of techniques to quantify fluxes in vivo, for example using mass balances, radiolabels, stable isotopes, etc.; (4) the development of techniques to elucidate the regulation of metabolic pathway networks using metabolomic, proteomic, and genomic information.
