(26d) Cell Culture Engineering- Driving Innovation and Extending the Horizon in Biotechnology

Mammalian cell bioprocess based protein therapeutics has greatly broadened the horizon of health care in the past decade. Many patients suffering life threatening diseases or chronic dysfunctions which were medically untreatable not long ago, can attest to the wonder that those drugs have done. The rapid growth of the repertoires of mammalian cell derived protein therapeutics, and the increasing demand of the those products has not been met exclusively by the expansion of the manufacturing capacity. In a short few years bioprocess engineering has driven the productivity upward by an order of magnitude and greatly enhanced process robustness. For the biochemical engineering community, this technological advancement is a cause for celebration. This presentation will highlight some key contributions of chemical engineering to the success of cell culture technology and looking to the future of cell culture engineering. Through invocations we will continue to pave the road for the expansion of the technology and to enable the advances of next cell bases bioprocess technology in regenerative medicine.
