Recently, the FeedCol strategy for improving performances of SMB, especially purity, was suggested by our group. ?FeedCol? is an abbreviation of ?Feed modified by Column.? In the FeedCol operation, the feed during a switching period can be supplied to the SMB process with the desired shape by periodically injecting pulse feed input through an additional chromatographic column. As a result, the product purity can be improved without any loss of the other SMB performance parameters.
In previous study, it was proved that the FeedCol strategy was well applied to the four-zone SMB process with two columns per zone (2-2-2-2). Four performance parameters (purity, recovery, productivity and eluent consumption) investigated were improved compared to results of conventional SMB.
The FeedCol strategy can be used for any configuration of SMB because the FeedCol operation can be easily operated by only adding a chromatographic column in all existing SMB units. In this study, the FeedCol operation was applied to three-zone SMB with two columns per zone (2-2-2-0) and another four-zone SMB with 1-3-3-1 configuration.
It is verified that the FeedCol operation can improve SMB performances, especially purity, in not only four-zone SMB configuration of (2-2-2-2) but also another two SMB configurations compared to conventional SMB configurations.
