The availability of moderate to high permselective membranes has given impetus to the search for the most energy efficient design for a membrane separation cascade with fewer stages. The existing ideal cascade theory is not useful for synthesis of such cascades with moderate to high permselective membranes, using only a few stages. This paper extends the scope of the cascade theory for such applications and presents a novel framework for the synthesis of an energy efficient membrane cascade for binary and multicomponent applications.
