Over the past years, a systematic study of functional groups appended to the imidazolium cations has been investigated in the quest for CO2 philic ionic liquids. [R]mimTf2N ionic liquids have been the primary focus of such studies. The functional groups investigated were alkyl, benzyl, nitrile, ether, hydroxyl, amine, and fluoroalkyl. In this presentation, our research efforts on synthesis and characterization of [R1R2]imTf2N ionic liquids will be presented. Results from fundamental studies of the thermodynamic and transport characteristics of CO¬2 in these novel ionic liquids will be reported. The experimental system used for these measurements involves tracking the decrease in pressure that results from the introduction of target gas into a small closed chamber containing a thin film of ionic liquid. The observed dependency of CO¬2 solubilities on the appended functionalities will be related to the physical properties of the ionic liquids such as glass transition temperature and viscosity. Self diffusion coefficients of imidazolium cation carrying different functional groups were measured at 25C using pulse gradient NMR technique. Effect of functional groups on self diffusivities of cation will also be discussed.
