New energetic ingredients are consistently arising in the energetics community, some with potential to make a positive impact in energetic formulations and their respective systems. As formulation requirements for testing and evaluation increase, so do the required quantities of the novel energetic ingredients being investigated. Process development is inherent with the scale-up of energetic materials. During scale-up processing parameters are evaluated for optimization. The challenge with scale-up of energetic materials is providing a process that is both safe and economical. Comprehensive knowledge of the energetic process is necessary for effective process development. The use of automated lab reactors , reaction calorimetry, and in situ analytical techniques accelerates the chemical engineer's process understanding, thus enabling safe optimization and scale-up of novel energetic ingredients.
