Carbonylation of olefins using homogeneous Pd complex catalysts provides an atom efficient route for the synthesis of a number of pharmaceutical and fine chemical products [1]. The most efficient catalyst systems consist of Pd complexes with promoters and co-catalysts [2]. Catalyst-Product separation is one of the challenges in these reactions, which demands development of immobilized catalysts with high activity, selectivity and stability. In this presentation, a novel synthesis of immobilized Pd(pyca)(PPh3)(OTs) [pyca = 2-picolinate] complex catalyst on a mesoporous SBA-15 support will be reported with its detailed characterization using powder XRD, multinuclear (13C, 29Si, 31P) CP-MAS NMR, XPS, SEM, and N2-sorption studies. The immobilized Pd catalysts on SBA-15 were found to be highly active and selective for the carbonylation of different aryl olefins and alcohols. These catalysts were found to be highly stable during carbonylation reactions as confirmed by the recycle studies and tests for Pd leaching. The comparison of the performance of homogeneous and immobilized Pd catalysts will be discussed.
