The quintessential academic has the following characteristics. He/she starts out as an outstanding graduate student doing phenomenal thesis research rapidly; continues with a brilliant career involving ground-breaking research and high-impact publications; advises graduate students to thesis completion and successful careers; does influential and award-winning teaching; serves his department and institution in committee and administrative leadership roles; serves as a counsel to faculty colleagues; and serves the profession in various ways. In this talk, I will show that Roger Schmitz is the quintessential academic.
