Universities and their Industry partners generally have the same business goals when they collaborate on research and development. One of the exceptions to this general rule, though, arises when the partners discuss the topic of the intellectual property (IP), who owns it, and how it is used. Some of these challenges are a result of the traditional business models that are used in the collaboration. These challenges can be overcome by utilizing new business models in the collaboration that treat the IP--and how it is used--differently.
