The CAREER award that I received from NSF helped initiate my research program in the application of chemical and biomolecular engineering principles to address key issues in transfusion medicine and tissue engineering. My research program focuses on two primary areas: 1) engineering novel hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) for various applications in transfusion medicine and 2) engineering HBOCs to improve oxygen transport to mammalian cell cultures. I will discuss how the CAREER award impacted my research in these two areas.
