Ott, K. C. - Presenter, Los Alamos National Laboratory

Recent results from DOE's Chemical Hydrogen Storage Center of Excellence will be presented. This Center is led by LANL and is one of DOE's three materials development Centers. The Center is a partnership among two national laboratories, 7 academic institutions, and two companies. This Center's work focuses on developing efficient processes that release hydrogen from covalent compounds and the subsequent efficient chemical regeneration of the spent fuels. Much of our work is directed at releasing hydrogen from amine-borane compounds such as ammonia borane and related derivatives. A high level overview of the chemistries we have explored for releasing hydrogen from these compounds will be presented, as well as a discussion of preliminary systems engineering issues and results. Regeneration of spent fuel is the Achilles heel of chemical hydrogen storage, and recent breakthrough results on the chemical regeneration of spent fuel and baseline process engineering and cost estimates will be discussed.
