The ability to rationally design organic-inorganic hybrid materials will have implications for fields as diverse as catalysis, separations, and biotechnology. This talk will present initial work from our lab in the area of synthesis and catalytic testing of dendron-OMS materials wherein the dendrons will contain chiral groups. After a brief summary of the hybrid material synthesis and characterization, the talk will described the catalytic properties of these materials. More specifically, we will describe how the 1) chiral group loading and 2) the method of the chiral group attachment to the dendron scaffold impact reactivity and enantioselectivity of the chiral groups in the nitroaldol reaction. The talk will conclude with a comparison of the activity between these materials and other materials (which are achiral) made and investigated in the Shantz Lab.
