If it comes to direct use of solid fuels in chemical looping combustion (CLC) systems, three main problem areas add to the general aspects valid for CLC of both gaseous and solid fuels: (a) conversion of volatile compounds formed in the upper part of the fuel reactor, (b) conversion of char in the fuel reactor governed by slow gasification reactions, and (c) separation of fuel ash from oxygen carrier material. The present contribution presents an approach towards a fuel reactor design that might represent an improvement to the currently discussed systems for direct-coal-CLC. The proposal is supported by results from a scaled cold flow model and design calculations.
