(349c) Synthesis of Super Strength Graphene Based Superlattice Nanocomposite

Graphene, a monolayer of covalently boned carbon atoms, displays remarkably unique mechanical and thermal properties. Recent studies have shown that Graphene is the stiffest and strongest known materials with an extraordinarily high in plane value of Young's modulus of E = 1.0 terapascals, and intrinsic strength of ?Ð = 130 gigapascals [1-3]. The superior thermal conductivity of Graphene in room temperature is ranging from (4.84±0.44) x103 to (5.30±0.48) x103 W/mK. To harness the superior mechanical properties of Graphene, we synthesized a new class of light weight super strong graphene based nanocomposite by periodically deposited Graphene monolayer (C6) with amorphous diamond (a-Cd) by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) and Molecular Beam Expitaxy (MBE) method. The (C6) (a-Cd) composite exhibited high specific strength and elastic modulus compared to those of their counterparts. Our approach provides a practical route to tune graphene-based composite material properties.
