One of the most important issues to be addressed to make hydrogen a viable energy carrier is its storage. Among other possibilities (liquid storage, gaseous storage) solid state H2 storage systems, by means of adequate materials, seem to be one of the most suitable solutions being able to achieve high gravimetric and volumetric capacities. The paper shows results of activities carried out at Savannah River National Laboratory to evaluate acceptability envelope for such systems. The aim of the acceptability envelope is to determine the properties of the coupled media and system needed to meet storage technical specifications. To do that, a steady state model has been set up, capable to simulate the behavior of different materials under different operating conditions. Various scenarios have been selected, starting from the DOE technical target specifications, and different H2 storage materials have been analyzed and compared. In addition, several sensitivity analyses have been carried out showing the influence of selected thermo-physical material quantities on characteristic sizes of the storage system.
