Reaction engineering is critical to developing safe, reproduceable and cost effective processes. This can be accomplished through the development of kinetic and process models. In addition, the processes may be hazardous and not amenable for scaleup. Processing of energetic materials is one family of chemicals that benefit from reaction engineering and production at minimum reactor volumes. Again, the use of kinetic and process models will assist the chemical engineer in developing these types of processes. Two energetic materials were evaluated using DynoChem software to generate a process model. This information was utilized to evaluate the equipment specifications for pilot scale processes.
