Fluidized bed combustors are very efficient systems for direct sulfur emission capture by limestone and related materials, and given the current interest in oxycoal combustion as an option for CO2 recovery, it is worthwhile to study sulfur release & sulfur capture in both O2/N2 and O2/CO2 conditions in fluidized bed systems. Sulfur release with and without limestone was investigated in N2/O2 and CO2/O2 environments for the following conditions: temperature range (600℃ - 870℃), O2 concentration range (10% - 30%), and a wide range of Ca/S ratios. In addition, a single coal particle combustion model was developed to help understand the mechanisms of sulfur release, sulfur capture and carbon release during coal combustion process. This paper will present results of both the detailed experimental study, as well as the companion single-particle modeling study, to provide explanations for the observed behavior of sulfur during oxy-coal combustion.
