In this present investigation an attempt has been made to formulate a coating colour consisting of coating pigments, binders and additives by well known statistical and experimental methods through a sequence of experimental design, experimental methods, regression estimation, optimization techniques and a synthesis of these methods in a unique algorithm for application to coating of paper and paper board. An attempt has been made to use Plackett- Burman statistical design for coating of paper. The pigments binders and other ingredients used are china clay, calcium carbonate, TiO2, casein, starch, dispersant, defoamer and NaOH depending on their requirements. Other parameters used are air knife pressure, air knife angle; number of times calendering and their interaction. The experiments have been conducted in laboratory air knife coater. The variables measured are brightness, gloss, smoothness and surface strength. Various regression equations have been developed for the same using least square techniques. The predicted properties from each model derived from statistical design are compared with the observed data and are found to be within reasonable accuracy for engineering estimates. The methodology can be used for better prediction for process selection than the existing traditional techniques.
