Catalytic Hydrogenation of Nitroaromatic Compound to Aniline: Diffusion and Kinetics Limitation & Catalyst Activity

Understanding the effects of Heat and Mass transfer for the rate of formation of intermediates (particularly hydroxylamine) and product formation to mitigate safety issues during scale-up.

Catalyst activity, selectivity and stability were also tested and identified to ensure a successful scale-up and purity profile. Catalyst inhibition was oberserved during plant runs and found to behave first order w.r.t Nitrogen partial pressure in the reactor. Charaterization techniques such as chemisorption revealed the type of catalyst inhibitor and helped in redesign process for sucessful scale-up.
