A new, scaleable and economical method for the extraction of non-polar lipids and hydrocarbons from a lysed algae concentrate will be presented. The new method avoids direct contact of solvent with the algae solids while selectively extracting the desired non-polar oils. In pilot tests at The University of Texas/SRP, non-polar oil extraction efficiencies of 50-75% were typical. The new contacting process also eliminates the need to steam strip the raffinate for the recovery of solvent.
The presentation will include process flow diagram, material and energy balances and preliminary economics of the novel process. The advantages and disadvantages will also be included.
