Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies were applied to investigate the upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties of the Yb3+,Er3+ codoped NaYF4 nanocrystals. Dynamic probing was shown to be an efficient tool to study the size-dependent photophysical properties of the upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs) that have no ?quantum efficiency? and was used to characterize the effects of size (8-200 nm), shapes (prism, rod, and plate), ion doping (Yb/Er) and core-shell structures (NaYF4 and SiO2 shells) quantitatively. The dynamic decay lifetimes revealed an energy transfer upconversion (ETU) process and the effects of both phonon confinement and surface quenching on the UCL efficiency. Our findings are relevant to the engineering of the nanostructures of the UCNPs aimed at upconversion bioimaging and photodynamic therapy.
