Succinic acid is valued as one of the key platform chemicals in broad applications. Biosynthesis of succinic acid from renewable biomass resource was reported in this paper. Here batch approach was carried out to analyze influence of several carbon sources on succinic acid production from crop stalk wastes by Actinobacillus succinogenes BE-1. Crop stalk wastes, including corn stalk and cotton stalk, were converted into a carbohydrates-rich feedstock with subsequent hydrolysis by enzyme. In this strategy, the concentrations of glucose in the raw carbohydrate material could reach 65%~80% of the total reducing sugar. Batch fermentation was performed to utilize corn stalks and cotton stalks hydrolysates as the carbon sources, giving 17.8 g L-1 and 15.8 g L-1 succinic acid, respectively with 30 g L-1 of initial sugar. In particular, high conversion yield from cotton stalk was achieved with about 1.23 g succinic acid per g glucose consumed. The strategy enabled the exploration of crop stalk wastes for the economical and cost-effective production of succinic acid by A. succinogenes.
