The model of Khakhar et al. (1996), originally developed for predicting transverse mixing in a rotating drum, is extended to also predict inter-particle coating variability for particles subject to a specified coating region at the free surface of the bed. Axial diffusion is also included in the model. The model predictions are compared to those measured from corresponding discrete element method (DEM) simulations. Agreement between the two models is excellent. A significant advantage of using Khakhar's model over a full DEM simulation is that much less computer simulation time is required to predict coating trends.
