RANTC, CoMSEF and CAST are co-sponsoring a Topical Summit on Simulation Based Engineering and Science (SBE&S) as a disruptive innovation, creating new and unexpected capabilities, markets and values for Chemical Engineering and the Chemical Process Industry. Through invited speakers, the Topical Summit will consider the implications of SBE&S for science and industry including key technological and applied capabilities and their impacts, the workforce, education, national investment and policy and the role of the Institute. Simulation Based Engineering and Science (SBE&S) – the use of computationally-enabled models as the integrating points for data, expertise, decision and discovery and the means of casting data and knowledge of natural and engineered systems into beneficial outcomes, has been an important aspect of every field of science and engineering for over 40 years. In only the recent few years, however, the unprecedented acceleration and pervasiveness of network, data storage, computational, and collaborative capacity and capability have produced a window in time that is disruptive for science and engineering. This session will examine this disruptive context for industry operations. For industry and specifically the chemical process industry, globalization along with uncertainties in the availability and cost of energy, security threats to operating facilities, the explosion of information technology, and the relentless pressure of global competition have led to an unprecedented shift in industries toward the business and economics of change, just in time processing and rapid response. Sustainability, environment, health and safety become performance metrics.
