(100a) New Developments In Reverse Osmosis and Applications In the Petroleum Industry

Authors

Bartels, C. - Presenter, Hydranautics

This seminar will present a brief overview of the recent developments in Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes and processes.  The rapid development of this field has led to the use of this technology for very large plants, up to 100 million gallons per day.  The main drivers for this are the low energy consumption, high quality of treated water, and confidence in plant performance.  The performance of new products and key design features for robust process design will be discussed.  This will include items such as pretreatment design, membrane array configurations, flux selection, and control of fouling.

The use of RO technology in the Petroleum industry is now growing and a description of various uses of RO technology will also be described.  One successful use of RO membranes to treat oil field produced water will be discussed in more detail to show the capability of the technology and the design considerations that are necessary.
