(288b) Who Are You Leading? How Do You Know?

Successful leadership requires a clear vision, committed followers, and resources. Without all three the leadership goal may not be accomplished. Very frequently, a clear vision is established and resources are provided but the followers do not follow due to a disconnect between the style of the leader and the styles of the followers and team members. This situation can be resolved by changing the followers, but this can be costly and time consuming. It is not always possible for a leader to choose or change the followers that are needed. Command and control is one approach and the success of this can be a function of the supply and demand of the job market at the time. A far more reliable and robust approach is for the leader to take the time to understand his or her own style and behavior preference as well as that of their followers. Understanding these can help a leader be successful under any circumstance with any group. This presentation will overview some key behavior preference and style measurements that accurately assess social and problem solving styles and how they can be used to assist leaders and followers in achieving this goal.
