This talk focuses on two new classes of nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs), which manifest liquid-like ion transport properties at high particle loadings. In one group (Nanoparticle Ionic Materials (NIMs)), electrostatic and steric forces dominate the interparticle potential and appear to be responsible for the system’s ability to relax to an equilibrium state. In the other group, only steric forces are present, yet the system is able to reach equilibrium in the absence of a suspending solvent. I will discuss equilibrium structure, rheology, and ionic transport properties of these hybrids. I will also study them for applications as anodes, cathodes, and electrolytes for advanced secondary lithium batteries.
