Previous research has demonstrated that activated sludge and anaerobic sludge from municipal wastewater can be fermented to enhance the lipid content. These lipids have potential applications in the production of biofuels and other value-added chemicals. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility of extracting these lipids using supercritical carbon dioxide with propane as a co-solvent and to compare the results with those achieved by traditional organic solvent systems.
