Rotating packed beds(RPBs) using centrifugal force to intensify mass transfer are HIGEE units with high performance. The zigzag rotating bed(RZB) is a new type of HIGEE unit. The rotor of RZB consists of stationary disc and rotating disc, forming zigzag channels for liquid-gas flow and mass transfer. The understanding of the three-dimensional gas velocity in the region of zigzag channel is essential for the design of the RZB rotor. The experiments were carried on in a RZB rotor of 490mm-diameter with air system. And the axial component, radial component, and tangential component of gas velocities at 12 point locations of 2 axial stations and 6 radial stations in the zigzag channel of the RZB rotor were measured with a five-hole pitot probe. The tangential component velocity, depended on gas rate and rotational speed, was correlated using the angular momentum equation. The tangential velocity is greater and smaller than the circumferential velocity of rotating baffle at the greater and smaller gas rate, respectively. And the tangential and radial component of velocities at the upper axial station reduces, because a great quantity of gas flows through the perforations on the rotating baffle in the zigzag channel. The radial component velocity near the outer stationary baffle becomes on the opposite direction, because the gas flows outwards under centrifugal force.
