Liquid membrane permeation with support layers is a promising technology for heavy metal recycling as well as applications in the chemical industry, food industry and pharmaceutical industry.

Goal of this research project is the optimisation of design for industrial applications.

After having confirmed the design principle of filter press arrangement scale up and operation in continuous mode was commissioned. Operation results of bench scale operation were confirmed after scale up.

In the next step optimisation of hydrodynamics of the inlet of the feed- and stripping phase was carried out. Due to laminar flow in the feed phase as well as in the stripping phase the residence time distribution may affect mass transfer performance. To obtain a narrow RTD pattern the compartments were therefore equipped with flow rectifiers.

Finally membrane stability was tested with two types of support layers. With a single-layer support long term stability test was abandoned after 2000 hours. With a triple-layer support long term stability was tested up to 7000 hours.
