9, 10-dihydroxy stearic acid (DHSA) and its derivatives are of high value due to their wide range of industrial application, including cosmetic, food, lubricant, plastic additives, personal care, pharmaceutial products and etc. It used to be synthesized by introducing hydroxy groups into carbon-carbon double bond of oleic acid with various catalysts. Almost all those process could not be industrialized for the more excessive co-oxidant and the boring separation process. Here we describe a more convenient method to obtain high purity DHSA by purified oleic acid and hydrogen peroxide with the catalyst of formic acid. The conversion of the oleic acid was over 97%. And the crude DHSA product was obtained by decomposition a small amount of excessive hydrogen peroxide over MnO2, followed by evaporating water and a residue catalyst. The chemical structure of the recrystallised DHSA was characterized by IR, NMR and MS. Sodium 9,10-dihydroxy stearic acid (DHSA-Na) was prepared by neutralization of DHSA with NaOH. Surface tension, wetting property, lime soap dispersing power (LSDP), Krafft point, detergency and other performances of DHSA-Na were well determined. The results indicated a variety of applications in many fields for the excellent surface and interface chemical performance.
