(392k) Modified Correction-Factor Analysis for Recycled Membrane Extraction in Multipass Rectangular Modules

ABSTRACT:

The membrane extraction techniques are in principle variants of
conventional liquid-liquid extraction but various shortcomings of the later are
overcome by the former as membrane extraction use none or very little organic
solvents, high enrichment facts can be obtained and there are no problems with
emulsions. Also, they can provide unsurpassed cleanup efficiency and high
extraction selectivity. The modified correction-factor analysis for recycled
membrane extraction in parallel-flow multipass
rectangular devices was introduced in present study, where the expressions of
mass-transfer rate and modified correction-factor charts thus derived, are
explicit. Unlike those in the conventional correction-factor analysis, the
results can be readily calculated without using try-and-error method. The
correction factors for recycled multipass operations
are plotted in the modified correction-factor charts,
they are function of flow rate, mass-transfer-area, distribution coefficient
and overall mass-transfer coefficient. Experimental results confirm the
predicted values for the extraction of acetic acid from aqueous solution by
methyl isobutyl ketone in the double-pass device.
