Global warming, resulting from greenhouse gas emissions, is an important issue. The current situation has motivated the recovery of hydrogen from off-gases as a clean energy carrier even though certain off-gases contain relatively low fractions of hydrogen. Coal gas contains H2 with CO, CO2, N2 and CH4. Due to the large amounts of coal gas, a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process is appropriate to achieve the proper purity level at low operating cost and high efficiency. More than two different adsorbents are applied to many PSA processes due to the adsorption affinity differences among the adsorbents. Therefore, the adsorption equilibrium data could be served as important data for selecting an optimal adsorbent of the hydrogen adsorption process of a first-aimed mixture, adsorption bed design and process simulation.

In this study, the adsorption equilibrium of the major components (H2, CO, CO2, N2, CH4)  emitted from coal off-gases was measured on zeolite 13X, zeolite LiX, and activated carbon by a volumetric method. The adsorption equilibrium were measured at 298K, 308K, and 323.15K in the pressure range of 1 ~ 10bar. The adsorption isotherm and heat of adsorption among the adsorbents were compared.
