The authors will present the results of the fourth survey in the resumption of the Chemical Engineering Education Special Projects Committee series of annual surveys on how chemical engineering courses are taught. The surveys are now conducted under the auspices of the Education Division of the Institute. This year’s survey covers capstone design, and seeks to determine what concepts are being taught, who is teaching the course(s), and what tools are being used. The role of industry in preparing instructors and in developing projects and case studies is also studied. Teaching methods and novel approaches are, as always, focus elements of this year’s survey. Some comparison with previous studies on the subject will be included.

Following the presentation of the survey results, a panel consisting of selected participants in the survey will lead a discussion with the audience covering common issues in teaching capstone design. Ideas and approaches discussed during the session will be incorporated into the final survey report.
