Amine based CO2 capture process has been studied and intensified using the heat integration concept. While many studies on aqueous absorbent-based carbon capture process focus on developing new solvent system, there is much less studies on process intensification to save required energy for CO2 separation.
The purpose of this research has been placed on development of a new process configuration that can achieve a considerable energy saving for CO2 capture. Sensitivity analysis for the absorber and desorber which are two main units of the process provided ideas and possible routes for process modification. With these possibilities, heat flows of the original process were studied for further heat integration to minimize unnecessary heat or coolant usage. With some modifications of the process configuration, heat requirements for solvent regeneration has been reduced considerably. Since minor modifications are proposed, results of this research are belived to be easily applicable to current amine-based carbon capture facilities. The new process has been suggested through a rate-based simulation study using AspenPlus.
