Electrochemical energy storage systems are used to efficiently store and transport electrical energy.  The applications for such systems range from portable electronics to vehicles and large-scale power plants.  This tutorial will describe the operating principles, materials requirements, rate processes and the design approaches relating it to the requirements of the applications.  The tutorial will discuss the features and performance characteristics of metal-hydride batteries, lithium-ion batteries, metal-air and metal-sulfur batteries, and redox flow type batteries.  The technical challenges to designing inexpensive, eco-friendly,  and robust electrochemical energy storage systems and the recent technological advances will be discussed.
