Process synthesis is the sequencing of individual unit operations in order to develop an optimal process flowsheet in terms of equipment configuration and operating conditions. Several techniques for process synthesis include heuristics-based design, geometric representation, and optimization methods. In order to converge on an optimal flowsheet it is important to combine simulation, process analysis, and process synthesis which generally requires computer-aided methods. Papers on applications of process synthesis and methodology development are welcome including new design heuristics or synthesis techniques that pertain to mitigating environmental impacts.
