Sustainability concepts are critically important in the chemical industry.  From a practical perspective, the implementation of sustainability throughout the process industries is increasingly important to our society, and thus to the success of the chemical industry. But sustainability is more than simply green chemistry and engineering, as it involves life cycle and societal implications.  Perhaps more so than elsewhere, the production of energy and its use illustrates the importance of sustainability in chemical processes. Interdisciplinary concepts have become the hallmark of sustainable chemical design, synthesis, process and use, and influence sustainable development of existing or new chemicals and materials using a holistic approach.  This presentation will describe recent activities in the application of sustainability and sustainable energy as they have been presented over the past few years in the AIChE quarterly Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy.
