A series of new polymerizable anthraquinone dyes with different colors were designed and synthesized via multiple reactions, and their chemical structures were confirmed by 1H-NMR and FT-IR. Then, the covalently colored polymer latexes were fabricated via semi-continuous emulsion copolymerization of the new polymerizable dyes with conventional monomers such as styrene, butyl acrylate and methacrylic acid, and the properties of the colored latexes and their films were characterized. The influences of the polymerizable dyes, initiator and surfactant on the emulsion polymerization and the latex properties were investigated. Results showed that both the conversion of the total monomers and the conversion of the polymerizable dyes decreased with increasing amount of the polymerizable dyes, and the UV-Vis spectra of the covalently colored polymers were as same as those of the polymerizable dyes. Comparing with the non-covalently colored polymer latex, the covalently colored polymer latexes exhibited advanced storage stability and color retention, and the latex films possessed excellent fastness towards light and solvent
