(245d) Assembling Engineering for Sustainable Development Programs

Authors

Jensen, C. - Presenter, Colorado School of Mines

This talk will present four years of action research aimed at developing an Engineering for Sustainable Development (ESD) degree program at a Higher Education Institution known for expertise in mineral extraction, geosciences, materials, and science-technology-engineering-mathematics topics. The action research presented will highlight six stages of research that when incorported into the education process illustrate the breadth and depth that ESD programs can take. The action research presented continues to evolve and recent outcomes (e.g. a collaborative international summer curriculum) will be presented. This research is a testament that traditional engineering programs can be progressive and make use of holistic concepts and not only reductionist education philosophy or principles.
