Modeling of Pb (II) biosorption by spent coffee ground in fixed bed column

Biosorption of lead metal ions by spent coffee ground in a fixed bed column was predicted through a mathematical model based on the ion exchange between protons and calcium ions in the biomass and lead metal ions from aqueous solution. The breakthrough curves in a fixed bed column were obtained with a flow rate of 5.5, 7.3, 11 and 22 ml/min and a metal concentration of 0.1 M, the maximum removal efficiency was 43.4 % at 5.5 ml/min. The mathematical model that describes the dynamics of the breakthrough curve at 5.5 ml/min was obtained from the mass balance including a global mass transfer coefficient, axial dispersion coefficient and affinity constant. The parameters of the model were obtained from mathematical correlations and the affinity constant from the ion exchange multicomponent isotherm model. A sensitive analysis was used to determine the significant parameters of the model on the breakthrough time. The global mass transfer coefficient was not significant in the mathematical model. According to the lower error value, the mass transfer model for the biosorption of lead ions in a fixed bed of spent coffee ground was found to agree with the experimental data.
