(510f) Labs and Experiments At a Distance

Authors

Henry, J. - Presenter, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
Serrano, B. Sr., Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas.

This paper presents the benefits to student's learning that can accompany the ability to access remote laboratory experiments. The presenters have developed experimental systems that can be operated remotely. We use the phrase "action at a distance" for this capability.  Studnets anywhere with network connection can conduct chemical engineering laboratory experiments from anywhere at anytime, day or night, irrespective of time zone. This allows students at any location or university to use specialized or unique or expensive equipment without regard to their university's capabilities.  This paper specifically touches on remote distillation, remote multi-tank water level control system and remote thermal conduction and convection experiments.
